Refugee United Film Response

The two main themes that stood out to me were the loss of family and the struggle living in poverty. It seemed that every single refugee had seen or heard of a family member being murdered and they had no idea where the others were. All the refugees wanted the same thing- to find their families. They also struggled with not having enough or any money. They had all been taken from their families, communities, and country's. They had no money to survive and they were doing things like picking up bottles to get enough money to eat. One quote that stood out to me was from the girl that spoke at the very beginning from Congo. She said, "I try to forget but I can't." This quote reminded me a lot of Ishmael and how he wasn't able to forget what he had been through. I can't imagine having to live with those memories for the rest of your life.

  1. Even that young boy was tossed into the world and made responsible for his siblings. It is hard to imagine being in his shoes. On top of that he saw his mother killed and doesnt know a thing about his father. These stories are true tragedies and Refugees United is a miracle.

  2. It is difficult to imagine having everything taken from you and suddenly being responsible for your own survival. We can only hope that the region stabilizes and people can start to try living normal lives.

  3. That particular situation with the young boy who had to care for his siblings really saddened me. He said that he saw his mother killed in front of his eyes, didnt know where his father was, and now facing poverty caring for 3 younger children. It was horrible that he had a decent life once with his full family and now had to live in this terrible conditions.

  4. As if losing family and friends was not enough, their country was obviously very poor. There was a man in the film who had to take care of his siblings, and was very poor. It is very sad to see people in that predicament, and something more should be done about it.
